Abstract. African American Vernacular English (AAVE), which is defined by Geneva Smitherman (1977: 32) as ‘European-American speech with Afro-American meaning, nuance, tone, and gesture’, has been investigated from various perspectives.
As African American English is what Labov describes as “the whole range of language [varieties] used by black people in the United States […] extending from Creole grammar of Gullah spoken in the Sea Islands of South Carolina and Georgia to the most formal and accomplished literary style” [1]
Elderly African Americans in the study shared many of the same regional features as the European American members of the community, while also maintaining some features that seem to be a result of a substrate influence of the initial African-English language contact situation (Wolfram and Thomas 2002; Wolfram and Schilling 2015).
